French MP sees analogue radio “extinction”
Questions ownership thresholds

The digital challenge has not escaped the watchful eyes of politicians the world over. Their opinions are wide, varied but seldom too controversial. We do, however, enjoy their choice of words.

French Senator Catherine Morin-Desailly has jumped into the deep end of digital waters calling for the French Parliament to make analogue radio extinct. (See press statement here - in French) Medium and long wave broadcasting should go away in the medium term followed by the rest of analogue radio broadcasting in the long term. She called for “rapid rethinking” of digital radio.

"If radio is a major media, it is confronted with technological changes that challenge their business model and fragment the landscape," she observed.

Mme Morin-Desailly also “questions the relevance” of the current ownership thresholds.

Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
