Uncertainty is a rude force on conventional media wisdom. The audience wants their expectations fulfilled, except when they don’t. They want to see, figuratively, their reflection, so long as it’s very pretty. Then, too, they want to find what they’re looking for, preferably without major expense or lifestyle change. Uncertainty brings out frustration but only for a moment.
Portugal’s two big commercial radio broadcasters are, still, neck-and-neck, so shows the most recent Marktest Bareme Radio audience estimates. Grupo Renascença, now known as Grupo Renascença Multimédia or R/Com, and Grupo Media Capital have dominated the Portuguese national radio scene for years. Media Capital in the April 2017 results leads with an aggregate audience share of 36.4% followed by 34.8% audience share for R/Com. Public broadcaster RTP has an aggregate audience share of 9.1%. Media Capital owns five national radio channels and its Rádio Comercial is the market leader with 24.1% audience share, down from 24.8% year on year. R/Com’s RFM is second with 23.9%, up from 22.8%. Rádio Comercial is a full-service pop rock channel and RFM is purely pop music. The two have been back and forth between number 1 and number 2 for about three years. (See Portugal national radio audience trend chart here) Second tier channels are even more competitive. Pop rock oldies channel M80, owned by Media Capital, moved into 3rd in the national audience estimates with 7.6%, up from 6.2% one year on. Pop rock oldies channel Rádio Renascença slipped to 4th place, 6.4% audience share, down from 8.3%. Public broadcaster RTP Antena 1 - general interest, mostly news and talk - placed 5th, 6.1% audience share, down from 6.6% year on year. Rock/alternative channel Antena 3 nearly doubled its audience share to 2.4%. Culture channel Antena 2 was up slightly.
