More People Tuning In: A Rising Tide Or Something More?
KISS 10 FM logo Economists remind us fondly that a rising tide lifts all boats. Surfers like riding the crest of any wave. Sailors know the difference between high tide and a storm swell. Broadcasters could be happy if they weren’t afraid of drowning.

Public radio channel rebranded, part of Web strategy
“young and ambitious”

Polish public radio Polskie Radio (PR) has rebranded Radia Euro as Radia Czworka (Radio Four) (August 2), changing banners and logos but not much else. The transition took a couple of days before all new elements appeared across radio and internet platforms. Radia Czworka targets listeners who “like fast pace, fun and an uncompromising approach to life,” said a statement.

Radio Euro launched in 2008 as a multimedia project, capitalizing on interest in the Euro 2008 football championships. It replaced Radio Bis, a business news channel. Internal surveys had shown listeners in Poland not associating Radia Euro with Polish public radio. Polish public radio operates Radia Jedynika (Radio One), Radia Dwojka (Radio Two), Radia Trojka (Radio Three) and now Radia Czworka.

At the same time the web portal for Polish public radio has undergone a significant upgrade, adding more audio and video. “We have enormous content, wonderful archives but also young and ambitious web editors,” said project manager Andrzej Mietkowski to media2.pl (August 2). “We know how to respond to market demands and also to cultivate the missionary nature of the site.”

Radia Euro was a virtual no-show in the first half 2010 Radio Track national audience survey.

RMF FM continues to lead in the national radio audience survey. Indeed, the station increased market share to 27.74% from 26.18% in the first half 2009. Radio ZET, still number 2, was virtually unchanged at 16.33%. (See Poland national radio audience chart here)

Polish public news and information channel Radia Jedynka, 3rd place, increased to 12.67% from 11.74% one year on. Jazz, rock and alternative music channel Radia Trojka also gained – and rather significantly – to 7.58% market share from 6.37% one year on. Radio Eska fell a bit, still in 5th place. Eska Rock, RMF Maxx and Radio TOK gained market share. (JMH)

DAB channel owner withdraws from London multiplex
Not happy with industry, regulator

In a bristling statement, the owner of one of the UK’s original DAB radio stations is withdrawing from the London DAB multiplex. Chantal Cooke, who launched Passion for the Planet with programmer Kenny Stevens in 2002, took a parting shot at the radio industry and UK regulator OFCOM. Passion for the Planet will “refocus its operations online.”

“Further investment in DAB in London has become increasingly difficult to support,” said Cooke in a statement. “DAB is a great medium for radio but squabbling within the industry and a lack of clarity and direction from OFCOM leaves us worried that radio may well have missed a great opportunity.” (See Passion for the Planet statement here) The station leaves the London DAB multiplex effective August 2nd.

The trials and tribulations of DAB digital radio in the UK and elsewhere are common knowledge. (See more on digital radio here) In many respects Passion for the Planet represents a widening of the media landscape that DAB could have brought.

Full disclosure: Chantal Cooke is a former colleague and dear friend. She and Kenny combined in Passion for the Planet a commitment to broadcasting and environmental issues. (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
