Awards For Developing Media’s BestOne World Broadcasting Trust (OWBT), founded nearly 20 years ago by ITV and BBC journalists, promotes media coverage of developing regions through awareness campaigns, the One World Media Awards and a fellowship program. The natural extension – the Special Award for Developing Media – recognizes in a very public way the contribution of local media in communicating the special needs of developing regions.
Award categories range from broadcast journalist of the year to a children’s rights award sponsored by UNICEF and the World Vision radio documentary award. These categories require broadcast or production in and for the UK. It is the Special Award that sets apart recognition for broadcasters and producers in developing regions. Crusading Radio Palabra de Mujer (Woman’s Word), operating in rural Nicaragua, received the 2005 Special Award. Its outstanding contribution cited by OWBT judges was support for education and women’s rights in the poverty stricken jungle area. Station Director Yamileth Mendieta, whose mother was killed by US-backed Contra mercenaries, accepted the Special Award at the annual London presentation. The 2004 Special Award recognized Congo’s Radio Canal Rélévation. The 2006 One World Media Awards will be presented in London June 8th. OWBT is seeking nominations for the Special Award for Developing Media. Outstanding community media projects and organizations contributing to sustainable development or human rights are encouraged to enter. Individuals and organizations may make nominate along those guidelines. The deadline is March 3rd. There is no entry fee for the Special Award. For information and nominations, contact OWBT. |
