Radio gets dumped by advertisers, bills are due
"completely incomprehensible"

Radio advertising in Russia was pummeled in the first quarter this year, reported the Association of Communication Agencies of Russia, noted business daily Vedomosti (May 20) and RBC (May 20). The 17% revenue drop from the same period last year was the steepest for the radio sector in several years. Advertising group OMD OM forecasts second quarter radio ad revenues could be worse; down 25% year on year.

Ad spending in Russia suffered in the first quarter due to the rapid decline in oil prices leading to instability of the Russian ruble. TV advertising rose 3% year on year and, predictably, online advertising bumped up 10%. Ad rates for all Russian media rose by 4%. Second quarter ad spending will be directly affected by the coronavirus pandemic and related fall in retail activity. Publicis Group/Russia chairman Sergey Beloglazov, to RBC (May 20), cited “abandonment of marketing activity by small and medium businesses, as well as a generally sharp decline in budgets in such categories as tourism, air travel, catering and fitness.” (See more about media in the Russian Federation here)

Advertising “activity” in Russia generally slumps during the summer months. Recovery in the radio market will not begin until the August/September period, said Media Direction Group managing director Denis Maximov.

More than a month ago, operators of several commercial radio stations in St. Petersburg appealed to the city government for relief from transmission fees, office and studio rent and, of course, tax payments. Over the last two months ad revenues have fallen by 80%, said Nashe Radio general manager Elena Danilova to media news portal OnAir.ru (May 21). Meanwhile, the bills are due. “Where to get this money from is completely incomprehensible.”

Weekly chart show abruptly withdrawn over song ranking
the hits just keep on coming

Disruption and discontent is a continuing saga at Polish state radio channel Trojka. This past weekend there was more. Quite unexpectedly, the Saturday Trojka Hit List program was cancelled. Also abruptly, three (maybe four) Radio Trojka hosts quit.

Radio Trojka is beloved by Polish listeners attuned to alternative music and the banter that goes with it. Over the last few months, several show hosts have departed, often complaining about the dreaded management interference. The story continues.

Music for the Trojka Hit List program is compiled by electronic vote each Friday. Ranking first (number one with a bullet?) was “Your Pain Is Better Than Mine” by Kazika Staszewski. Then the program was cancelled by the editorial board before it was broadcast. Later, channel director Tomasz Kowalczewski suggested the playlist had been “manipulated” and did not reflect votes of listeners, reported media portal wirtualnemedia.pl (May 18). The song in question contained a reference to Law and Justice (PiS) party chief Jaroslaw Kaczynski visiting a cemetery during the Easter holidays. (See more about media in Poland here)

Mr. Kowalczewski demanded that music editor Bartosz Gil and two other employees sign a statement attesting to the official version of the story. They refused, Mr. Gil was suspended and the others resigned. On Sunday about 30 employees staged a demonstration - masked and two meters apart - near the Radio Trojka studios, and a video was distributed on social media.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
