Motor FM / Netzeitung Plan for Berlin Radio Approved

The Berlin-Brandenberg Media Authority (MABB) announced approval of a joint venture between Motor FM, principally owned by former Universal Music president Tim Renner, and webcaster Netzeitung to operate a new radio channel

In December the MABB awarded FM licenses in a shuffle filling the vacancy of bankrupt Hundert, 6 and replacing Voice of America (VOA) with US public radio network National Public Radio (NPR). Motor FM and Netzeitung were granted the 100.6 FM license and obliged to present a joint operating plan that included absorbing former Hundert, 6 employees and paying off its debts. Star FM, former VOA partner was awarded a separate frequency, without VOA. The frequency awarded to NPR had been used for temporary permits and is expected to be upgraded when German FM allocations are reshuffled later this year.

The new station will be called 100.6 Motor FM, targeting the young and urban Berlin audience with new music, a download service and podcasts, and now speech-based content. Netzeitung is owned by Norwegian Orkla Media, already in the German market with a youth-oriented website and a media sales company which will market the new station as well as KISS and RS2. Motor FM continues to operate on a Stuttgart frequency.

Approval of the plan for 100,6 moves Motor FM from the 106.8 frequency which it shared with children’s channel Radio Teddy. - January 25, 2006
